Reed & Barton began producing the Francis I design in 1907 and it proved to be one of their most enduring. With such a long run (ending in 2019), every conceivable utensil has been produced with this pattern — weird scissors, goblets because who doesn’t want to drink out of a goblet? , a tomato knife, a spatula just for toast… Our offering is a bread tray. The rim is 11-3/4″ x 7-1/2″. The bottom is 7″ x 3-1/8″. The depth is around 1-1/4. The bottom of the tray is stamped with R&B’s adorable little date mark for 1954 (looks like an apothecary’s mortar & pestle) plus. REED & BARTON STERLING x568 FRANCIS I. I work for a goldsmith and he was kind enough to polish this dish for me, so it’s ready to use with a mirror finish. This piece does not have a monogram. And it never did. Presented is a lovely Reed & Barton sterling silver compote or footed serving dish. This compote is made in the popular Francis I pattern, which features rich designs of fruit and foliate scrollwork. On this piece, the motifs are beautifully chased on the lobes of the bowl, alternating between clusters of fruit and stylized acanthus. The decoration is quite crisp and well done, with a nice level of detail and texture.
